Although estate taxes and probate avoidance are often cited as leading reasons to do estate planning, they are not the most important reasons. The most important reasons are to preserve, protect and transfer everything you own in order to benefit, protect and plan for everyone you care about. People with large estates have several options to minimize their estate tax liability. Remember, though, the exemption, currently five million dollars, is set to decrease to one million dollars in 2013. That creates a need for estate tax planning for anyone who has not included death among their goals for the next two years. Of course, estate tax is only one reason to plan your estate. People with estates of any size can plan for their disability and death, provisions for their loved ones who survive them, avoidance of probate, final arrangements, etc.

Distributions of your assets, after your death, can be made in several ways. The tricky part is to balance access your beneficiaries will have to the money against protections provided.
